Where Secrets Sleep by Marta Perry - Review of the first book in the Watcher in the Dark series

BACK  OF  THE  BOOK  BLURB

IN AMISH COUNTRY, NOT EVERYTHING IS AS SIMPLE AS IT APPEARS

After a terrible betrayal, Allison Standish flees Philadelphia for the small Amish village of Laurel Ridge to claim an unexpected inheritance. Allison intends to sell the mansion housing various shops on Main Street---until she meets Nick Whiting, a single father and tenant of Blackburn House, who challenges everything she believes about her estranged grandmother and the Amish community.

Strange stipulations in her grandmother's will soon bring distant relatives and seething townsfolk to Allison's door. As anonymous threats escalate, Nick grows protective of Allison, and she finds herself falling for the handsome carpenter... But then she discovers her grandmother's death may not have been accidental, and someone wants Allison gone. Permanently.

MY  REVIEW
Marta Perry pulls you into this book thinking its about getting away from one devastating situation into another, she had not seen or heard from her grandmother since she doesn't remember ever hearing from or seeing. Then all of a sudden there's more to add to the story.  You will want to keep reading to see if things are as they appear.

Okay, I'm on to book number two, "When Secrets Strike"!

MY  REVIEW

OH MY GOODNESS! The things this attacker does to an innocent woman, but is it the right woman, and why? You will not be able to put this book down! Yes, yet another must read from Marta Perry. I am anxiously waiting for the third book, "Amish Secrets" to come out next month.

MY  REVIEW

WOW, just WOW!! The prologue was intriguing, then the story began. I was confused for a short time but soon figured it out and the author pulled me in slowly, then a little faster, faster, and the last few chapters I could not put the book down until I finished it.

I have enjoyed Colleen Coble's books since I happened upon one several years ago and she has not disappointed me yet. This is a must read and I am anxiously waiting to read the second one in the series to see where things go from here.

Marshmallow Malice by Amanda Flower - Review of the fifth book in An Amish Candy Shop Mystery series

BACK  OF  THE  BOOK  BLURB

Caught in a sticky situation . . .

With Juliet Brody and Reverend Brook tying the knot in Ohio's Amish Country's most anticipated nuptials of the year, Bailey King is determined to do everything in her power to make the event a sweet success. Except midsummer heat waves and outdoor ceremonies don't mix, and an exasperated Bailey soon finds herself struggling to fulfill bridesmaid duties and keep her stunning marshmallow-frosted wedding cake from becoming a gooey disaster. Then much to everyone's shock, the entire ceremony crumbles when a guest drops dead, and the cause isn't sunstroke . .

Turns out, the uninvited victim came equipped with lots of dirt on the devout reverend's hidden past. As Reverend Brook tops the murder suspect list on what should have been the happiest day of his life, Bailey and her sheriff's deputy boyfriend vow to clear his name. Can the duo boil down a series of baffling clues before Juliet considers her marriage a bad mistake---or the killer whips up another deadly surprise?

MY  REVIEW

Another great cozy from Amanda! This one keeps you on your toes, trying to keep everyone's 'secret' straight isn't as hard as it sounds, but is everyone telling Bailey their 'secret' telling the full story, and are some  connected in ways you'd never think? Better grab a copy and get started on figuring this one out.

Oh, and do NOT read if you are hungry! The treats in this story sound absolutely YUMMY!!

Love's Mountain Quest by Misty M Beller - Review of the second book in the Hearts of Montana series

BACK  OF  THE  BOOK  BLURB
(copied from Amazon.com)

Young widow Joanna Watson is struggling to make a new home for her five-year-old son, Samuel, in the little mountain town of Settler's Fort. When she returns home from work to find Samuel and the woman watching him missing, with no lawman in town, she enlists a man she prays has enough experience in this rugged country to help.

Isaac Bowen wants nothing more than a quiet, invisible life in these mountains, far away from the bad decisions of his past. But he has a strong suspicion of who's behind the kidnapping, and if he's right, he knows all too well the evil they're chasing.

As they press on against the elements, Joanna fights to hold on to hope, while Isaac knows a reckoning is coming. They find encouragement in the tentative trust that grows between them, but whether it can withstand the danger and coming confrontation is far from certain in this wild, unpredictable land.

MY  REVIEW
I can just never say enough about Misty Beller's books! She keeps you so interested that it's hard to put down and find myself repeating myself on reviews. You get pulled in and want to be there to help during difficult times and enjoy the faith the main characters have.

I sooooo enjoy Misty Bellers books, I even pre-order them for the Kindle, one of only two or three authors I do that for and one of the few I read on my Kindle as I do prefer paperbacks.

His Risk by Shelley Shepard Gray - Review of the fourth book in The Amish of Hart County series

BACK  OF  THE  BOOK  BLURB
New York Times bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray brings us another compelling suspense story in her THE AMISH OF HART COUNTY series, this one featuring an undercover English DEA agent who will do anything to protect the Amish girl he loves.

Calvin Fisher left the Amish community at fourteen and never looked back. Only his brother's illness can return him to Hart County. Now, as Calvin works to make amends, he meets Alice, a local nursery school teacher, and falls hard for her. But he has a secret that could threaten the happiness he's finally found.

Alice shouldn't like---or want---Calvin. He's English, has a questionable past, and an even more questionable job. Still, she can't help being intrigued. Though Calvin assures Alice that he's worth of her, she's torn between surrendering to her growing feelings and steering clear of him.

When a sudden surge of criminal activity alarms the community and even targets Alice, Calvin fears that his double life has put everyone he loves at risk. As for Alice, she can't help but wonder if the brave and honorable man she's lost her heart to is far more dangerous than she could ever imagine.

MY  REVIEW
This was a great addition to this series and shows another side of the Amish life. They have 'problems' the same as the English do, they do handle things differently and seldom reach out to 'us' for help but sometimes it is necessary. Great book!

MY  REVIEW

This is quite the mystery to be happening to Amish women. Another good suspense by Shelley Shepard Gray. The books in this series are on the shorter side but very enjoyable.

Her Fear by Shelley Shepard Gray - Review of the fifth book in The Amish of Hart County series

BACK  OF  THE  BOOK  BLURB
In New York Times bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray's latest novel in the suspenseful AMISH OF HART COUNTY series, an EMT falls for a woman with ties to an Amish community where people are dying similar, suspicious deaths.

Sadie Detweiler never imagined she'd move to Kentucky, yet here she is a pregnant, unmarried Amish girl banished by unforgiving parents to live with kin she barely knows. The men are gruff and her cousins re secretive. Worst of all, elderly matriarch Verba becomes mysteriously ill shortly after Sadie moves in. When EMT Noah Freeman arrives, Sadie immediately notices he's unlike any other Amish man she's met. Noah is warm and confident, and has an easy way with practically everyone in the community, both Amish and English. Though Sadie is drawn to him, she has little hope he will reciprocate her feelings once he learns she's with child.

Noah can't understand how a girl as sweet and lovely as Sadie ended up sleeping on a cot in Verba Stauffer's kitchen. He also senses Sadie is terrified of something. Concerned, he checks up on her. Eventually they strike up a friendship and soon their attraction is undeniable. When Verba later dies at the hospital and her death is followed by two others, Noah's boss wants him to dig around the Amish community for clues. He agrees--for Sadie's sake--because only the truth will keep Sadie safe and by his side.

MY  REVIEW
This is a heartbreaking story about Sadie, to have to live in fear, will she be able to move past it? Maybe being 'made' to move is a blessing, but then is it really?  You find yourself wondering when you see what is going on in her new home. The author does a wonderful job of keeping you locked in this story.

The Hope Jar by Wanda E Brunstetter - Review of the first book in the Prayer Jars series

BACK  OF  THE  BOOK  BLURB
A HOMELESS GIRL FINDS AN UNLIKELY FAMILY

What happens when making an elderly Amish couple very happy means going along with a lie that becomes more complex by the day?

Michelle Taylor is not who her new family in Lancaster County believes her to be. The Lapps were looking for their long-lost granddaughter when they met Michelle and she assumed the identity of Sara Murray. Once homeless and hopeless. Michelle has come to love her new Amish friends and even considers the idea of romance among them.

Finding an old blue jar in the barn that is filled with slips of paper with handwritten thoughts, quotes, and prayers by an unknown author encourages Michelle's budding faith---but she also finds herself feeling convicted. How can she tell the truth without hurting the ones she has truly come to love?

MY  REVIEW
I usually enjoy Wanda Brunstetter books, as I did this one, but I did find it pretty 'predictible'. What I mean is that I could tell what was going to happen before I turned the page in so many instances in this book. The story is an inspirational one and Michelle seemed to have remorse for what she was doing, how she appeared to be turning her life around even while living a lie, so that was good. You will have to read the book to see if she did actually come clean and change her life, or not.

MY  REVIEW
I haven't read one of Shanna Hatfield's books in quite some time and oh how I have missed them. I'm so glad I pulled this one of of my TBR pile/list.

Shanna does a wonderful job of pulling you right into the story from the very beginning and never lets you out. I can highly recommend this book, and the series, if you enjoy a good Christian Historical Fiction story. I will suggest you start at the beginning of the series though.

These are very short stories but what good reading material you will find on these pages. If at least one, if not several, of them don't touch on your of own life at some point in time, then you must really be blessed. It may just be the way you think about things/people, how you react to certain situations, how you deal with health problems, etc. Stories about being willing to accept help and having faith.

The Amish Candymaker by Laura V Hilton - Review of the second book in The Amish of Mackinac County series

BACK  OF  THE  BOOK  BLURB
Agnes Zook finds herself on her own in a small Amish community in Mackinac County after a tragedy kills her family. Most of the Amish call her "off in den Kopf" (strange) since she's starting her own business and forging her own way in the community instead of relying on the bishop to take care of her. Since she's viewed as non-submissive and too-forward for an Amish woman, she's not courted by young men in the area.

Isaac Mast is on the verge of leaving the Amish church. He's become a sought-after auctioneer and has a thriving business, but he feels confined by the strict rules. When his brother is severely injured in a wild fire, Isaac receives a letter from his sister-in-law, begging him to come to Mackinac County to help out while his brother is hospitalized. Isaac agrees but is unsure how to manage their young children when he has weekend auctions he's expected to attend.

Agnes may be he answer to a prayer. Sparks fly when she and Isaac meet. But could their differences help them form a deeper connection to their faith...and each other?

MY  REVIEW
Both of the main characters in this book have quite different personalities from most of the Amish stories I have read, but quite interesting. Laura Hilton always does a great job of writing stories that hold my interest. I would recommend this book as a fun read as you try to keep up with where Agnes and Isaac.

The Rancher Takes a Cook by Misty M Beller - Review of the first book in the Texas Rancher Trilogy

BACK  OF  THE  BOOK  BLURB

MY  REVIEW
I can't believe I am just reading this, somehow I missed this series by Misty M. Beller and OHHH, what a mistake that was! As with all of her books that I've read, it is a 'hard to put down' story. You won't go wrong by grabbing a copy!!

Courtships and Carriages by Janet Syas Nitsick - Review of the first book in the Great Plains series

BACK  OF  THE  BOOK  BLURB
Courtships and Carriages, a sweet Christian romance, returns readers to the Midwest in 1892, where men who drove fancy carriages like debonair Nolan Brandford could make ladies' hearts flutter, such as Gwen Ward's. Her heart raced every time she saw him, especially when these rides included secret rendezvous, pretty flowers and stolen kisses. ...

Her decision could be an easy one if only her dear-childhood friend, Russ Knudson, a kindhearted, humble man, a man who works with his hands -- a farmer -- was not also vying for her hand. He may not be as refined as Nolan, but his feelings were just as sincere and Gwen's love for him ran deep. And, if only Nolan was not the son of the corrupt mayor and her father, the publisher of a local paper, was not investigating that corruption.

The answer is in her court in Courtships and Carriages which includes intrigue and suspense when a trunk full of mayoral electoral ballots comes up missing.

MY  REVIEW
This was  a nice quick read. The author, new to me, did keep you guessing about what Gwen would do. Her mother and heart pushing her in one direction, her father and loyalty leading her the other way and her brother pushing her one way but willing to support her in whatever she chooses to do.

Searching for You by Jody Hedlund - Review of the third book in the Orphan Train series

BACK  OF  THE  BOOK  BLURB
Her Search for a Place to Call Home
Leads Her to the Last Place She Ever Expected

For years, Sophie Neumann has been running from the orphanages of 1850's New York City. Tasked with caring for two younger children, she's determined not to let them be taken from her, and not to abandon them the same way her older sisters did her. But times are growing desperate, and when she falls in with the wrong crowd and witnesses a crime, she realizes fleeing the state is her only option.

Disappearing with her two young charges into a group of orphans heading west by train, Sophie hopes to find safety and a happy life. But when the train stops in Illinois, she faces an agonizing decision as the orphans will be placed in new homes. Afraid she'll lose them forever, she finds help in a familiar face she never expected to see so far from New York.

Reinhold Weiss has finally purchased his own small farm in Illinois. With mounting debts, a harvest to bring in, and past scars that still haunt him, Reinhold is in no position to give his heart away . . . but can he say no when his long-lost friend shows up on a nearby farm pleading for his help?

MY  REVIEW

I don't know WHY I let so much time pass between the reading of each one of the books in this series! What a finish to the Neumann family story, Sophie being the youngest may have struggled the most but had the strongest will. This is a series that you must read in order, oh and there is a short prequell, about half the length of each of the three books in the series, out there, "An Awakened Heart". It is only available on the Kindle or Audible, I just checked and right now they are both FREE if you are interested in reading that. I would highly recommend this series!!

The Farmer's Bride by Kathleen Fuller - Review of the second book in the Amish Brides of Birch Creek series

BACK  OF  THE  BOOK  BLURB
They promised to keep each other's secrets . . .
not realizing they were about to make some of their own.

Martha Detweiler has a problem many Amish women her age would envy: she's the only single woman in a community of young men, and they're all competing for her favor. Overwhelmed by the unwanted attention, Martha finds herself constantly fleeing from her would-be suitors, dismayed at what her life has come to.

Birch Creek's resident matchmaker, Cevilla Schlabach, suggests a solution: Martha and the bishop's son, Seth Yoder, should pretend they are dating. What better way to keep the other young men away?

But Seth is the only man around not interested in Martha. He has a secret hobby that keeps him away from social gatherings: woodcarving. Having grown up in poverty,he's determined to keep his father's farm successful, even if it means he has no time for dating. Then Delilah Stoll, a new resident of Birch Creek, eyes Seth as the perfect man for her granddaughter. Suddenly Cevilla's proposition doesn't seem all that ludicrous. Can Seth and Martha convince their family and friends to leave them alone?

The second book in bestselling author Kathleen Fuller's Amish Brides of Birch Creek series, The Farmer's Bride celebrates the unexpected power of love and the joy of discovering God's calling.

MY  REVIEW
Yet another great story by Kathleen Fuller, I really enjoy her books and this one was no different. I am looking forward to the next one in the series, "The Innkeeper's Bride" which was just recently released. Grab a copy of "The Farmer's Bride" and enjoy!

Andrew by Jennifer Beckstrand - Review of the first book in The Petersheim Brothers series

BACK  OF  THE  BOOK BLURB
Andrew, Abraham, and Austin Petersheim's family business
has earned them the nickname The Peanut Butter Brothers.
But if their matchmaking younger siblings have their way, all
three may soon bear another title: husband . . .

Handsome, hardworking, and godly, Andrew Petersheim has always been sure of his place in his Wisconsin Amish community. He'll be a welcome catch for the local girl show finally captures his heart. Mary Coblenz certainly isn't that girl. Two years after "jumping the fence" for the Englischer world, she's returned, unmarried and pregnant, Yet instead of hiding in shame as others in the community expect, she's working at the Honeybee Farm, ignoring the gossips--and winning over Andrew's eight-year-old twin brothers . . .

For all Andrew's certainty about right and wrong, it seems he has a lot to learn from Mary's courage, grace, and resilience. She's changing his notions about forgiveness and love, but will she in turn accept the challenge of starting over and choose to stay---with him?

MY  REVIEW
The twins in this series have picked up where, in antics not the storyline, Grandma Annie left off in the Huckleberry Hill series, I'm already hooked on this series! This author is one of the BEST, she pulls you in, makes you giggle, touches your heart and keeps you wanting more. I thought I'd read every one of her books but I found one I missed so will have to get it to finish that series.

I am quickly moving on to read "Abraham" as I got the first two books in this series for Christmas. "Andrew" will not be out until June, JUNE, I have to wait until JUNE to finish the series!!

Very highly recommended and a must read!

The Refuge by Ann H Gabhart - Review

BACK  OF  THE  BOOK  BLURB

Can the power of love and the bond of family
triumph in a community that cannot accept either?

With the threat of a cholera epidemic at their heels, Darcie and Walter Goodwin join the Shakers, whose villages seem immune to the disease. It's meant to be temporary, but when Walter is killed in a riverboat accident, destitute Darcie has little choice but to stay with the Shakers. To complicate matters, she is expecting a baby conceived before she and her husband came to the Shaker village. Marital relationships are considered sinful in this celibate community, putting Darcie in a unique--and lonely-- position. Can the arrival of widower Flynn Keller and his headstrong daughter offer Darcie the hope of happiness?

MY  REVIEW
The Shakers lead interesting lives, not sure I could do it. The author does a great job of explaining their ways and telling the story that I really enjoy reading about the Shakers. This story is has you pulling for Darcie to find a way to be able to be a mother to her baby and not just a sister. Will seeing the birth of a child and what the mother goes through change any of their minds and let her keep the baby in her room? I can recommend this book as a good read so grab a copy and enjoy.
